Chapter 407: Chapter 407: Kindness Will Not Be Late
The old man and the old lady sat in the guardian’s room, chatting softly.
Both of them were in their late sixties this year, not yet seventy, but because of years of toil, they appeared older. It had been hard, but their children had finally made it, and their good days had gradually begun to ease.
The old man sat there and heaved a sigh of relief, saying incessantly, “Ah, there are still more good people than not!”
“Even my daughter and son think I’m dirty, but Director An doesn’t mind at all. He used his hand to help me out, really… Ah, such a good person!”
Indeed, anyone who experienced such an event would be endlessly grateful…
With his back against the bed, the old man was filled with emotion, while the old lady seemed to have something on her mind, sitting there without saying a word, her face a bit flushed and feverish.
Seeing his wife silent, the old man couldn’t help but ask, “Old woman, what’s the matter with you? Not talking?”
The old lady was a bit embarrassed and didn’t have the courage to speak, thinking about what had happened in the past, she felt somewhat remorseful.
Noticing something was off, the old man couldn’t help but turn around and saw her face was extremely red.
He was startled, “What’s wrong with you? Your face is so red, I’ll call a doctor for you!”
Seeing this, the old lady hurriedly grabbed the old man, “What are you doing, sit here and be quiet for a while!”
The old man didn’t understand, “What’s the matter with you? You’ve got to speak up!”
The old lady couldn’t help but sigh, “This Director An… I’ve met him before!”
The old man was momentarily stunned, “When was that?”
The old lady spoke the truth, from the moment she saw An Yanjun, her face turned red. She had seen this man before, and… the impression was deep.
The old lady then said, “Ten years ago, but… not in this hospital, it was at Dongda Second Hospital.”
Upon hearing it was ten years ago, the old man had already forgotten, he was working away from home at that time, returning only once every six months. Back then, their youngest son was at college, the eldest hadn’t married yet, and with the heavy family burden, the old man had gone to the capital to work on the subway construction with his fellow workers, completely unaware of the incident his wife mentioned.
The old lady let out a long sigh, “About this matter… I didn’t tell you at all, you were still in the capital. I didn’t want you to worry. I was washing dishes at home, didn’t notice the water on the floor, and fell down, landing on my wrist!”
“I couldn’t lift my arm because it hurt so much, but I couldn’t bear the thought of going to the hospital. It got worse after a day, so I went to Dongda First Hospital. As it turned out, it was Dr. An who treated me.”
“He took an X-ray of my wrist, which showed no fracture and nothing serious. He prescribed some medicine and told me to go home and rest.”
“But… the next day when I got up, I still couldn’t lift my arm, so I went to the emergency room. A check showed a minor fracture in the elbow joint.”
“At that time, I was quite upset, feeling like the young doctor had misdiagnosed me and caused me to spend extra money. I was so angry that I reported the young Dr. An to the medical affairs department.”
“Fortunately, it wasn’t serious and didn’t need surgery. The hospital gave me a free cast and prescribed plenty of medicine.”
“Actually… it was because I didn’t make my condition clear. Ah… I even complained about Dr. An, really…”
At this point, the old lady felt quite embarrassed, after all, she had taken the young Dr. An to the medical affairs department back then. For a young doctor, that would also be an unfavorable record.
At that moment, the old lady said, “Later on, after about a year or so, I cut my hand while chopping vegetables, and I rushed to the hospital. It just so happened I ran into Dr. An again!”
“However, he probably didn’t remember me, but I… I remembered him. When I saw him, I felt really embarrassed and was about to leave, to switch to a different doctor.”
“But after examining me, Dr. An told me that my tendon was severed and that I needed surgery.”
“Our family was going through tough times then, barely making ends meet. How could I afford surgery, there was simply no money! I just told him to disinfect the wound and wrap it up and leave it at that!”
Dr. An explained to me for a long time about the importance of the tendon… but there was just no money at home!”
“Determined, I pulled out my handkerchief. Dr. An saw me taking out a handkerchief filled with small change from my pocket, he immediately understood, but… he was also worried about not sewing the tendon, but I really didn’t have enough money…”
“Later, Dr. An still stitched me up in the treatment room. He paid for the tendon suturing materials himself; I remember clearly, it only cost twenty-five yuan for the bandaging fee and five yuan for the registration fee.”
“I was so embarrassed at the time, but I didn’t have the courage to tell Dr. An that it was me who had complained about him earlier. I had no money to show my gratitude, so I just ran off, and I never dared to go back to Dongda Second Hospital, afraid I’d run into Dr. An!”
At this, the old man was also bewildered, not expecting such a turn of events.
The old lady sat there, silent for a long time.
It was the same for both of them!
After a while, the old lady finally said, “Ah… it must be fate that I’m here to repay a debt of gratitude. I thought I’d never see Dr. An again, but I didn’t expect to come across this situation today.”
They were silent for a long time.
After a while, the old man stood up, put on his slippers, and looked at his wife and said.
“Let’s go. We should be straight, Director An is a good person, and we have to make things clear. If we need to apologize, we will apologize. Later we’ll call Baoshan to prepare a gift for Director An tomorrow. Tonight we have to speak up.”
The old man was an honest person who couldn’t keep things to himself. Hearing his wife’s words, he immediately got up and wanted to go.
The elderly auntie, upon hearing this, became somewhat flustered but still rose to her feet.
The two of them entered the office uneasily, where An Yanjun was genuinely reading a book.
The old man approached with a sheepish smile, “Director An, I hope I’m not disturbing you?”
An Yanjun put down the book and nodded, “Mmm, what’s up? Are you feeling unwell?”
The old man shook his head, saying with embarrassment, “I’m here to thank Director An, really, I’m quite ashamed.”
An Yanjun smiled and shook his head, “It’s nothing.”
The old man gave the elderly auntie a meaningful glance, and then she slowly began, “Dr. An, I’ve got something to tell you, please don’t be mad at me!”
An Yanjun looked puzzled, gazing curiously at the elderly auntie, “What’s the matter?”
Her face turned red, and she spoke in a tiny voice, “I… back when I was at Dong Da Second Hospital, I filed a complaint against you…”
“It was eleven years ago. I had hurt my wrist again, and you treated me, saying it was nothing serious… The next day my elbow hurt, so I went to the emergency room, where they found a slight fracture in my elbow. I was a bit angry, so I reported you to the medical affairs department, saying you had missed my diagnosis. Back then… I hadn’t explained my situation clearly, and you were just trying to save me money, so… the fault was mine!”
Upon hearing this, An Yanjun instantly recalled the incident.
He had just started working at the time, lacking in experience and clinical expertise, and that incident had a significant impact on him!
It even played an inseparable role in shaping the character he later developed.
An Yanjun became very meticulous precisely because, as a young man, that incident had such a profound effect on him.
Indeed, it was this very incident that led An Yanjun to develop his current thorough work attitude.
Back then, doctor-patient conflicts weren’t as tense as they are now, so… An Yanjun wasn’t punished since everyone made mistakes occasionally, and the medical system wasn’t perfect at that time.
After listening, An Yanjun quickly shook his head and said, “Don’t blame yourself for this event. To tell you the truth, I should thank you for it.”
What An Yanjun said was heartfelt.
Without experience, there can be no growth. Over the years, his meticulous nature had indeed saved him from a fair share of troubles!
After a moment, the elderly auntie continued, “There was another incident later on… I cut my finger while chopping vegetables and ended up in the hospital where I encountered you. I… I didn’t dare mention that I had complained about you. Seeing I had no money and not wanting to leave me unattended, you sutured my tendon for free, even paying for the suture material out of your own pocket… I am truly grateful.”
“I thought about thanking you afterwards, but when I went to Dong Da Second Hospital I couldn’t find you; they said you had switched positions… ah…”
“I didn’t expect to meet you again today, and to personally help our old man with…”
“Dr. An, it was my foolishness back then, I hope I haven’t caused you too much trouble.”
After listening, An Yanjun couldn’t help but smile, “Alright, uncle, auntie, you should head home and rest early, don’t worry about it, this is what I should do.”
The old man shook his head, “No, Director An, one should reciprocate kindness. We may be uneducated, but we have heard a few wise words from our ancestors.”
With that, the old man pulled his wife over and gave An Yanjun a sincere bow.
“Director An, you are a good person, we will never forget your kindness!”
…
Sometimes, life is just such a coincidence, filled with twists and turns even in the ordinary, and anything can affect our growth.
But kindness will never be late.
…
…
PS: These two chapters are about Director An Yanjun’s past. He is a very real person. I, as an author, have limited abilities and might not capture everything perfectly.
Perhaps some think I’m being too idealistic in my writing, but isn’t it within my power to depict selfishness?
Yet there are some things I hope to soften with my own abilities, such as the doctor-patient relationship, adding a bit of warmth to the cold winter.
Though I have resigned and am now at home, I really hope that every doctor will abide by medical ethics with compassion and uphold the moral foundations of their profession to be good doctors.
Also, I wish to do my part, however small, to alleviate the current tense medical environment and the increasingly strained doctor-patient relationships with characters and stories from within the industry.
I believe that kindness is never too late!
There are still the lives and pasts of characters like Chen Bingsheng, Shi Na, Li Baoshan, and others to come.
This is a lengthy novel, and I hope to see the characters through from beginning to end!
Cough cough… Though it’s only two chapters, it’s 7,000 words, more than what three chapters would usually contain. Splitting them up seemed incoherent, but I’m sure you all understand my intent. Yes, that’s right!
